I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.
(Psalm 140:12)
When Jesus cast out his net, he cast them wide and deep. What he drew it in, it was filled with the bottom dwellers: the poor, the homeless, society's outcasts. They were the ones who knew they needed Jesus, and Jesus ministered to them. In the same manner, we follow by example and embrace God's heart for the homeless and serve those who are in need.
Daily homeless interaction [any size group]
When? ANYTIME!
Where? ANYWHERE!
You don't have to wait for a scheduled event to be able to reach out to the homeless! They're right there on the streets! When you pass by them, spend a moment and ask how their day was. Talk to them and get to know them better. Offer them lunch if they're hungry and prayer if they're distressed. Show them that God did not forget them them and that God's children cares for them.
Game Night [any size group] !TB test required
When? Sunday nights 7:30-9:00PM
Where? Maxine Lewis Shelter
Bless the homeless people by spending time with them. Play board and card games, or just spend time chatting. This is a wonderful opportunity to understand the homeless situation in a practical and fun way.
Developing Through Art [1-4 helpers per night]
When? Mon, Wed, Fri 7:30-8:30PM
Where? Not sure till January
Every night, the homeless return to the Maxine Lewis shelter for showers and beds. Unfortunately, the shelter can only house a limited number. Families, children, and women are usually sent to a monthly rotating overflow church to spend the night. As parents rest their tired feet, engage the children in art and help them express themselves with crayons, markers, watercolor, and fingerpaint. Everything is supplied- just bring a joyful heart willing to reach out to the little ones.
Foodshare [min. 1-2 helpers]
When? Monday & Saturday 9:00-10:30PM
Where? All around SLO!
Have you wondered what restaurants do with leftover food after each day? Well, some restaurants throw it away. What a waste! This is where you come in. Travel to various restaurants as they close, load up containers with leftover food, and transport it to the Maxine Lewis shelter. A vehicle would be preferred, but do not let that stop you.
